General Information:

Southern Connecticut State University is a flourishing community of over 10,000 students located less than three miles from downtown New Haven, near the historic Westville section of the city. Founded in 1893, Southern has evolved into a comprehensive university where more than 700 faculty members lead students in a wide range of studies and research specialties across 116 graduate and undergraduate programs. As an intentionally diverse and comprehensive university, Southern is committed to academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good. The institution is in the midst of the first phase of a $230 million master plan to transform the center of campus. A major part of this expansion is the new academic science building, which houses facilities for biology, chemistry, environmental science, earth science, physics, and nanotechnology.

Faculty and students at Southern have access to a variety of scientific instrumentation, such as a computing cluster, NMR, LC/MS, scanning and transmission electron microscopes, LCSM spinning disc confocal microscope, Wasp II Spiral Plater, and a Protocol laser colony counter. In addition, Southern has partnered with the City of New Haven to establish a new Bioscience Career Ladder that expands and enhances pathways for students seeking careers in the local biotechnology industry. This collaboration includes a new major in biotechnology with a chemistry minor; an updated biochemistry concentration; graduate-level certification programs in areas such as project management and healthcare or pharmaceutical management; and new biotechnology concentrations for students in other STEM disciplines.
