Conversations with BioCT’s Summer 2024 Interns

Ximena Pulido, Marketing & Communications Intern
Yale ’25

Why did you choose to intern at BioCT this summer?
I was eager to learn more about the life sciences ecosystem overall, and I knew BioCT would offer me a rich learning opportunity that would enhance my communication skills. Looking back, BioCT exceeded my expectations in every single way!
You got to participate as part of the SPRINT internship program. What was that like, and what were the benefits of being a part of a large cohort?
Participating in the SPRINTS program was incredibly rewarding, allowing me to engage with companies in CT and gain insights into their work. Additionally, I had the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of interns and industry leaders outside of BioCT who provided me with knowledge and resources.

What did you learn that you think you will incorporate in your career?
While at BioCT, I learned more about communicating and engaging with diverse audiences across various industries and niches. In my future career, I aspire to take on a more generalist role that will allow me to continue interacting with people from a broad range of professional backgrounds.

How can our community better serve interns so future classes learn even more, make additional connections, and most importantly for our mission stay in CT upon graduation?
Our community could better support interns by organizing networking and community events that provide insights into professional opportunities in CT. In the future, it would be exciting to see an event where Life-Science SPRINT interns come together to showcase the projects they’ve been working on over the summer!

Adwoa Danso-Dodoo, Business & Operations Intern
Yale ’24

As a 501c3 with limited resources how did you secure funding through your school? We know a lot of our members would be interested in this possibility!
There were so many Yale funding resources, such as fellowships and the Summer Experience Award (SEA), which supports students working in unpaid or lower-paid internships during the summer. However, since I had already used my SEA award in my junior year, and it can only be used once, I chose to self-fund this experience.
What were the biggest surprises during your time at BioCT?
BioCT is a small organization, but I was genuinely impressed by the sheer amount of work the team accomplishes! The number and scale of events they plan each year, along with the success in their execution, truly surprised me. It is a small but incredibly powerful force.

Has your time at BioCT changed your thoughts on the future or opportunities you are exploring?
Absolutely! I have always aspired to start my own non-profit, and this experience solidified that goal for me. Additionally, working with such a close-knit team and culture was so enjoyable that I now hope to join a similarly intimate firm after graduation.
