First and foremost a huge congratulations to Dan O’Keefe, to be named our new Commissioner for the DECD in February. Dan prioritized meeting with me during what was probably the busiest week of his life and we look forward to a strong partnership. We are extremely grateful for all the advocacy and collaboration with Commissioner Daum and hope we will continue work together in her new role.Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining the Women’s Power Panel at Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce’s Big Expo. I was joined by Lt. Governor Bysiewicz, Professor Khalilah Brown-Dean, Marietta Lee of The Lee Foundation, and Moderator Chanel 8 Anchor Laura Hutchinson. For the handful of people who missed our panel (as the Chamber knows how to pack and run an event!) here were some themes/golden nuggets:

  1. We all came from humble beginnings and that is a strength.
  2. Tenacity is a superpower – more so than any experience or title.
  3. We have to not only support women achieving leadership roles, but once they get there make it less uncomfortable for them.
  4. The cream always rises to the top – hold your head high.
  5. Many pivots and decisions are based on family – and that’s a positive.
  6. We took risks and believe we earned where we are – the anti-imposter syndrome.
  7. We used others doubts and even snickers (based on gender, color of our skin, size, shape) as ammo. Rather than reacting, internalizing an “I’ll show them” attitude.
  8. We are often comfortably uncomfortable where we are.
  9. As Laura said “If you are not pissing people off you are not doing your job.” None of us arrived unscathed and while we are all so fortunate we are also human. We hope, as we enable others to rise, that we can be supported to not only be at the top but happy and flourish so it can feel more comfortable.
